2014 Fred Wedler Outstanding Dissertation Award

Jing Hu working in a University of California, San Diego Lab21 July 2014 — It is with great pleasure to announce that former BMMB graduate student, Jing Hu from Dr. Yanming Wang's lab, is the recipient of the Fred Wedler Outstanding Dissertation Award. Each year the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department selects one Ph.D. dissertation to receive the Wedler Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. The monetary award is given to the student whose dissertation is judged to be the best, based upon evaluation criteria given to the student’s dissertation committee. All students defending a Ph.D. dissertation are automatically considered for this award.

Jing Hu graduated from Penn State in the summer of 2013 with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology.  She is currently a postdoctoral scholar in Professor Xiang-Dong Fu’s lab at University of California, San Diego. Under Professor Fu’s supervision, Hu is now involved in projects to understand the mechanism underlying direct conversion of somatic cells, particularly those from human patients, to functional neurons. This holds great potential for understanding and developing effective therapeutics of neurodegenerative diseases.

Please join BMB in congratulating Dr. Hu on this noteworthy accomplishment.
