Research Interests

My research with Dr. Hietpas explores the secondary transfer of gunshot residue (GSR) to bystanders not present during firearm discharge events. We will use SEM-EDS to analyze samples taken from the hands of shooters and bystanders involved in a number of mock shooting scenarios.

About me:

My name is Ryan Schonert, and I am from Fairmount, IL. I graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL in 2016 with a B.S. in Chemistry. After spending my undergraduate years searching for a career direction, I fell in love with forensic science as a way to practically apply lab skills to the needs of criminal justice. I applied to the Penn State Master's program for forensic chemistry because the staff and faculty demonstrated a dedication to high quality education while providing hands-on experience. I hope to use my education from Penn State in either the public or private sector working in a crime lab.  In my free time I enjoy superhero movies, disc golf, and playing music.
