Main Content

Dr. Tim Miyashiro supervises BMMB graduate students Nathan Wasilko (2015) and Ericka Reed (2014)Penn State's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) offers a Ph.D. program in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Molecular Biology (BMMB). BMMB is comprised of over 50 diverse and vibrant faculty with research areas spanning from the structures of biological molecules and their mechanisms to the development of multicellular organisms.

The major goal of the doctoral program is to provide a challenging and rewarding academic environment in which students can develop research and teaching skills to the fullest. Training is flexible and is tailored to the talents and research interests of each student. BMMB students benefit from career development events that bring in speakers and recruiters, as well as skill development workshops. All accepted BMMB students are eligible for two travel awards to help with costs associated with traveling to scientific conferences.

After graduation, approximately two-thirds of our alumni have gone on to postdoctoral positions at major institutions and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in the United States and abroad. The postdoctoral graduates subsequently obtained positions in academia or industry. Graduates have also taken teaching positions at colleges and universities or permanent research or administrative positions.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is also home to two professional degree programs:
