BMMB Graduate Student Association

Main Content

The purpose of the BMMB Graduate Student Association (GSA) is to provide opportunities for career development, networking, enrichment, and to advocate for students' interests in BMMB.

2016-2017 BMMB GSA Officers

Anyone interested in participating on the GSA is welcome. Elections are held yearly at the May Coffee Hour. A first year liaison to the GSA is elected by peer vote from any interested volunteers among the incoming first years during the fall semester. The responsibilities of the first year liaison include attending a monthly meeting and acting as a point person between the first year students and the GSA. The idea is to help the first years stay informed about resources and events in the department and to help the GSA better address concerns of new students.

BMMB GSA Hosted Events

Welcome Week

Series of events to welcome new BMMB students to the program. Events include: a hoagie party, bowling night, pizza party/coffee hour, downtown State College night out, hike up Mount Nittany, and an ice cream social.

Departmental Tailgating

Home games are celebrated by tailgating outside the stadium, with larger parties occurring for the homecoming and Blue and White football games.  The location of the tailgate will be made know to interested parties shortly in advance of the event.  All students are welcome to attend regardless of whether or not they plan to watch the game!

Night Outs

After the end of football season, monthly excursions occur on Friday evening to eat and socialize.

Coffee Hour

Free coffee and snacks are provided by the GSA one afternoon per month.  This is an opportunity to socialize with fellow grad students, catch up on gossip and talk about science with students outside your field of expertise.

Grad Talks

On the second Thursday of each month, two students present 20 minute talks to fellow grad students without any faculty present.  This is a low-stress environment to practice giving a talk in front of people.  Dinner is catered by various restaurants.
