BMB, Microbiology, and Biotechnology students participate in 2011 Undergraduate Exhibition.
Benjamin Chambers (MICRB) and Hoon Chang (BMB) won first place in the Health & Life Sciences Division of the 2011 Undergraduate Exhibition held April 13, 2011 in the HUB-Robeson Center of Penn State's University Park Campus.
Under the guidance of Dr. Ken Keiler and Nitya Ramadoss (BMMB graduate student), Ben and Hoon test small molecules for their ability to prevent the growth of the bacterium Mycobacterium smegmatis via trans-translation inhibition. If successful, their findings may have implications toward a novel tuberculosis treatment.
The University-wide celebration of undergraduate research hosted 160 students from 9 campuses. Thirteen BMB Department students were among the 37 students who contributed to the 31 posters in the Health & Life Sciences Division. Their research encompassed:
- sorghum stalk rot pathogen identification
- potential exogenous microbial contaminants of Greenland ice
- whooping cough bacterium virulence factor gene regulation
- antibiotic resistance
- trans-translation inhibition in Mycobacterium
- mechanism of the first replication cycle in mammalian embryonic cells
- microsatellite inheritance and instability
Congratulations to our winners and to all who participated in this forum! BMB is proud of your accomplishments. Keep up the great discoveries!
